Sutherland, in the far north of Scotland, is a beautiful region of mountains, wild rocky coasts and white sandy beaches. Salmon leap in the rivers, eagles soar above the great forests, herds of deer drift across the hillsides and you can go for miles without seeing another soul. It is here you will find the Rovie Estate, which offers three stone-built traditional cottages just halfway between the sandy coast/famous Golf Links of Dornoch on the A9 (Dornoch Beach, photograph above) and the small town of Lairg on Loch Shin, from which it is easy to visit the extreme north-west headland of Scotland at Cape Wrath (plus Lochniver and Ullapool). The A9 gives access to John O' Groats on the extreme north-east, allowing day-trips to Orkney.

The Estate can arrange fishing for both trout or salmon on the River Fleet. There are miles of wonderful walking amongst many varieties of rare flora and fauna recognised and protected by The Nature Conservancy as a 'Site of Special Scientific Interest'; while for the historian there are the remains of a Celtic settlement nearby. Ambitious young Klondikers can try panning for gold at Kildonan; there is an indoor swimming-pool at Golspie - and you can visit the distilleries at Tain and Brora and sample the local brew.

The cottages have been refurbished and all three on the Estate have the use of a laundry room with washing machines and tumble-driers. Heating is by open-fire (wood-burning stove in Stables Cottage) with electric CH in the bedrooms and night-store heater in the hall (electricity included). Bed-linen and towels are included. Pets are welcome by arrangement. Sorry, no smoking within the cottages.

Keeper's Cottage (sleeps 6)

Keeper's Cottage is detached, standing back from the Rogart road, and faces south across its walled grass garden and the valley of the River Fleet to the mountains beyond. There is an open fire in the comfortable sitting room, a double bedroom downstairs, and two twin bedrooms on the upper floor.

Downstairs:

• Sitting room with open-fire and TV(Sky)/DVD.
• Kitchen/Dining room with microwave, electric-cooker, fridge, etc.
• Bathroom with bath, shower, WC and basin.
• Double bedroom.
• Conservatory.

Upstairs:

• Twin bedroom.

Rovie Garden Cottage (sleeps 6)

Rovie Garden Cottage faces on to its own pretty front garden and stands against the beautiful walled garden of Rovie Lodge, which tenants are welcome to visit. It is a most comfortable cottage, with open fires in both the sitting and dining rooms, a recently refitted modern kitchen, and three attractive bedrooms, two with stripped oak floorboards and iron bedsteads.

• Dining room with open fire.
• Kitchen with microwave, electric-cooker, fridge, etc.
• Bathroom with bath, WC and basin.

Stables Cottage (sleeps 6)

Stables Cottage has its own enclosed patio and garden to the rear and faces on to a courtyard. In additional to the comfortable open plan living area which now has a wood burning stove and a recently fitted new kitchen, there is a large double bedroom with king size bed and en suite facilities, a further double bedroom downstairs and a twin bedroom upstairs.

• Open-plan Sitting/dining room with wood burning stove, Sky TV/DVD and kitchen area with microwave, electric cooker, fridge, etc.
• Bathroom with bath, shower, basin and WC.
• Double-bed room (king size) with en suite shower.
