Sleeping 4

Tucked away in the heart of a quiet glen on a private Estate, mid way between the Ardnamurchan peninsula and the Road to the Isles on Scotland's lovely west coast, Rock Cottage occupies a setting of unparalled natural beauty, in a commanding position overlooking The River Moidart. It is sheltered by attractive woodland, with the magnificent hills of Moidart providing a spectacular backdrop.

Rock Cottage

The cottage is a traditional whitewashed dwelling which has been beautifully refurbished to a high standard, and has the further addition of a new conservatory to the front. It stands quite alone: the nearest neighbours, a couple of Estate cottages, are quite out of sight about 3-400 yards away down and round the corner on the loch side. Inside, there is a cosy sitting room with electric stove, a spacious kitchen-diner with all the usual appliances. There is parking for several vehicles at the door.

Once you've found your little bit of heaven here, in this utterly peaceful and private Highland glen, you may be reluctant to leave. Deer, red squirrels often come to the cottage, buzzards and eagles can all be spotted here. Fishing can be arranged by the Estate, and tenants can walk right out and explore the magnificent hills and lochs, and enjoy this area rich in wildlife.

Two miles to the west is the beautiful inlet of Loch Moidart where the ancient Macdonald stronghold of Castle Tiorim can be seen and lost settlements explored. Those looking for larger beaches can make for the legendary silver sands of Arisaig and Morar (27 miles), though there is a beautiful beach just 10 miles away at Kentra. At Arisaig, too, you will find the delightful golf course at Traigh.

The Glen

If you fancy a bit of island hopping, you can proceed a little further to Mallaig, (33m, all facilities) from where you can take the ferry across to Armadale for a day on Skye, or sail to the Small Isles of Rum, Eigg, Muck and Canna. And these are not the only Scottish islands you can reach easily from Rock Cottage: head out along the Ardnamurchan peninsula and from Kilchoan (31m) a car ferry operates to Tobermory on Mull.

By driving north to Lochailort and turning eastwards along the Road to the Isles, you will reach Glenfinnan at the head of Loch Shiel, where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard in the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion. A further 11 miles or so will bring you to Fort William (all facilities) at the foot of mighty Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain, where there is skiing at Aonach Mor, riding, an 18 hole golf course, leisure and sports centres. The series of locks at Neptune's Staircase, which mark the end of the Caledonian Canal, on the way into town, are also worth a visit.

The nearest shops and hotels are 5 miles away from the cottage at Acharacle, with petrol either at Mallaig or Strontian (21m). Oil-fired central heating, bed linen and towels are all included!included in the rental. Up to two well-behaved pets are welcome by arrangement, but should be confined to the downstairs area of the house. There is a payphone (no mobile reception). Sorry, no smoking within the cottage.
