'The Isle of Mull is of isles the fairest' according to song and, indeed, Mull is one of Scotland's most fascinating islands with its magnificent scenery, peaceful bays and wonderful beaches. The 'capital' of the island is Tobermory (42m), a colourful little town with painted housesclustered round the harbour and famous as the setting for the children's TV series Balamory.

At the opposite end of the island, not far from Mill Cottage, is the holy island of Iona with its atmosphere of amazing tranquillity. There is a foot ferry to Iona from Fionnphort. From here, too, there are boat trips to the geological marvel of Staffa and its wondrous Fingal's Cave.

Mill Cottage is a charming, traditional stone cottage in the little village of Bunessan (which gave its name to the Gaelic air now known as 'Morning has Broken'). The cottage is within easy walking distance of the village shops and licensed hotel while other good eating places can be found a short drive away.

The cottage is excellently appointed and comfortable, with central heating and a multi-fuel stove. There are two upstairs and one downstairs bedroom, a well-equipped kitchen-diner and a snug sitting room. In a tranquil setting just off the single-track road to Bunessan, Mill Cottage has its own fenced garden (parking) which has a burn running through it. The owner lives in a small extension butting on to one of the gable ends.

This area is perfect for family holidays. As well as the boat trips already mentioned, you can visit the sandy beaches and peaceful inlets close by. You can sail, dive, fish or walk in the hills roundabout. The island has two golf courses, the nearest one at Craignure (31m). This is the landing point if you arrive by car ferry from Oban. (Another less expensive ferry runs between Lochaline and Fishnish – no booking necessary.) Wildlife and bird enthusiasts should keep an eye out for buzzards and eagles in the skies, and Minke whales and basking sharks may be seen in the sea.

Oil central heating, electricity, fuel for the stove, bed linen and towels are all included in the rental. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome by arrangement.
